Saucony Creek Brewing Company

Listen up, New Jersey beer fans….more fresh local beer is heading your way! This week we are excited to welcome Saucony Creek Brewing Company from Kutztown, PA to our family of impeccable craft brews. This small artisan brewery just opened its doors in March of this year and is already cranking out some mighty fine suds! Our launch includes their flagship Stone Fly IPA as well as their fall seasonal Captain Pumpkin’s Maple Mistress. Be on the lookout for them at stores and bars in the month’s ahead!

About the brewery…
Owner and head brewer Matt Lindenmuth discovered his passion for beer while touring around the world as a professional X games superstar, tasting beers in each city and country he traveled to. After many years as developing his skills as a homebrewer, he decided to take his hobby to the next level. He opened Saucony Creek in his hometown of Kutztown, with a mission to pay homage to his community and environment. Local ingredients, including home-grown hops, are used wherever possible to ensure a true “farm-to-pint” experience and all malting is done on property. Their tap handles are hand-crafted by local woodworkers and a portion of the profits from Stone Fly IPA go to the Schuylkill Action Network, a local water conservancy foundation.

Learn more about Saucony in this quick interview with Matt:

Q: What do you want NJ craft beer drinkers to know about Saucony Creek?
A: I’m excited to introduce Saucony to our neighboring states. Here at Saucony the goal is to incorporate local ingredients and craftsmanship into all of our beers. We operate a small farm near the brewery where we grow some of our own brewer’s barley, hops and other spices and produce. The goal to bring together the community through the social centerpiece of a great craft beer.

Q: If we could only try one Saucony beer in our lifetime, which would you want it to be?
A: Captain Pumpkin’s Maple Mistress Ale, our 9.5% ABV Imperial Pumpkin Ale with roasted butternut squash, maple syrup and rum spices added.

Q:How many beers have you brewed since opening in March?
A: We currently have 8 beers that we are brewing regularly.

Q: Of all the beers you make, what is your favorite beer to brew and why?
A: I love all of our beers, but most commonly I’ll grab a Stone Fly IPA as my go-to beer.

Q: Aside from the hops and malt you are growing on site, what other local ingredients do you use for your beers?
A: Cucumbers, peppers, honey, maple syrup, and many different local spices.

Q: What kind of malt is the one you are growing on site?
A: We grow a 2-row base malt.

Q: What will be the first 100% PA grown beer that you will make?
A: Next Fall (2014) we will release our first Harvest Ale and that will be a fresh wet hopped ale with our locally grown and malted barley. 100% Pennsylvania grown and brewed from farm-to-pint.

Q: Is there a tasting room open to the public?
A: The tasting tap room is open and we offer brewery tours on Saturday’s from Noon-5PM. We hope to complete the build of our brewpub and open the pub bar in early 2014.

Q: Do you have any favorite restaurants in NJ?
A: I’m a big fan of The Pour House in Westmont and Barcade in Jersey City.

Q: What are some of your favorite craft brews?
A: I enjoy most anything made in Belgium. I love sour beers (and we have begun aging and souring our own for Saucony), and I am inspired by the craft revolution trail blazing of Jim Koch at Sam Adams, Sam Calagione at Dogfish, Greg Koch at Stone, Ed & Carol Stoudt and many more who have been in the business much longer than I have. With that said, I greatly respect their beers and hard work.

Q: Favorite dishes to pair with Stone Fly & Maple Mistress?
A: Anything with some good heat and spice with Stone Fly IPA and I like a good creamy butternut squash bisque with my Maple Mistress.

Q: Do you like to cook? If so, what do you like to make?
A: I do like to cook, the time and preparation of a recipe is much like the care that goes into brewing a great beer. The idea of cooking and brewing really go hand-and-hand. I like to experiment with the smoker and spices.

Q: How did you hear about Hunterdon and why did you decide to partner with us?
A: I learned of Hunterdon through a friend who used to live and work at a bar in New Jersey. He raved about Hunterdon being the distributor to work with for craft beer in NJ.
