March, 2013

Scott, Rob, John, Todd and Brian took a trip down to Athens this March to visit our friends at Terrapin Beer Company. Their hosts Oliver and Ranger were fantastic tour guides, taking them to all the best beer joints and restaurants in town and packing a ton of activities into a short 36 hour trip!

Their first stop was Trapeze Pub where they tried one of Terrapin’s newest beers, Treehugger. Scott describes this beer as “a pseudo Altbier that was delightfully malty, balanced, and low in alcohol making for an excellent addition to the session ales of recent popularity.”

Next stop was the brewery, where they were greeted by President and Co-Founder John Cochran and escorted to the in-house bar to fill up prior to the tour. Here they tried the Georgia-exclusive Terrapin Golden Ale, a great, clean-drinking blonde ale at about 6% abv. Brewmaster and Co-Founder Spike Buckowski joined the crew and proceeded to show them every square inch of the brewery with great enthusiasm. The crew especially enjoyed checking out their yeast propagation tank and the dumptruck outside the brewhouse waiting to receive the spent grain from the mash tun to be delivered to local farmers!

After the tour, they enjoyed some beers and sun outside in the beer garden where local musicians are invited to play on a regular basis. Ranger treated them to a presentation on the brewery’s history and plans for the future including the official release of Treehugger and the forthcoming Recreation Ale!

The rest of the time in Athens was spent checking out some other local bars and restaurants where they dined on breakfast tacos with grits, wagyu skirt steak, ropa vieja, local cheese and charcuterie…and to wash it all down… more delicious Terrapin beers as well as some mighty fine offerings from other local craft breweries.

Thanks to Oliver, Ranger, John and Spike for the fantastic hospitality! Here’s to a great year for Terrapin Beer in New Jersey!!
